Mother General’s Canonical Visit to the Sisters in Australia

Arrival at Brisbane

mother general 1We, the Sisters in Australia were very happy to welcome Mother General Maria Goretti Lee and her Assistant, Sister Emily in at the beginning of the Consecrated Year 2015. Her presence at the First Profession of the six second-year Novices was a great encouragement for the young Sisters. Brisbane was the first and final stops of this visit.

Through Mother’s presence and her sharing of the global news of our Congregation, especially the fruitful works that God had done in Africa and her gratitude and trust in God’s Providence. This was the significant opportunity for the young Sisters to build up religious experience, attitudes and a sense of belonging in the SPC family. We are not isolated in one province or in one particular country but we are united in Christ despite differences in cultures and languages.
Mother wasted no time interviewing individual Sisters in the community and then she and Sr. Emily left us for Sydney to meet the Sisters at New South Wales.

A day in Moss Vale

On 29th January 2015 at 10 a.m. Sr. Angelina and Sr. Anne Catherine picked up Rev. Mother General Maria Goretti LEE, Assistant General Sr. Emily, and our District Superior Sr. Teresa Lau at Sydney Airport.Mother General visit
As visitors cannot miss visiting two iconic places in Sydney – Opera House and Harbour Bridge, there is no exception for us. So, our first program was to tour round Opera House. From there we could see the grand Harbour Bridge. They took lots of photos.
Mother General had an appointment with the Bishop of Wollongong Diocese – Most Rev. Peter Ingham. On the way we took the opportunity to visit our Lane Cove Community. As time was limited, we stayed for a short time and we had to continue our journey.
We had a happy time with the Bishop. Finally we arrived at St. Paul’s International College at 5 p.m. as scheduled.
After Vespers, Mother General started meeting Sisters from Moss Vale and Melbourne individually, and then we had dinner. After dinner, Mother continued to interview the Sisters. Next morning, Mother walked round the School and met the Department Heads and had breakfast with them. At 10 a.m. we all left for Brisbane.

Entertainment Program for Mother General at Brisbane

Opening the program was a short drama inspired from the Gospel. Even though we are not actresses and we did not have much time to practise, we were confident to do it. “The call” is the title of the drama. We recalled how Jesus called His first disciples and how they responded to the call. The six newly professed Sisters reviewed their memory when they first left their home and career to follow Jesus. At the end of the drama was the song “follow me”, Jesus is inviting each of us to follow Him. Then following the drama were the Chinese and Vietnamese dances. It is the mother general 1chance for me to know more the culture of other countries. One of the highlights of the Program was the recitation of a poem co-authored by Sr. Marion and Sr. Mary Joseph entitled “Called by Love, Fearless They Go!” The poem sums up the brief history of our 30 years’ foundation in Australia and the self-sacrificing apostolic ministries rendered by the SPC Sisters in the States of NSW, Queensland and Victoria. We also had a chance to travel around the world in a brief time by singing the song “Malo, Malo”. It includes many languages: Korean, French, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Portuguese… all meaning “thanks!”. Finally, before we concluded our Program, Mother Maria Goretti Lee handed out Pope Francis’ Congratulations and Blessing Cards to the newly Professed and the 6 Sisters who will be celebrating their Golden Jubilee later this year in October. The singing of Salve Regina concluded our entertainment program. We were tired, but relaxed and satisfied because we all enjoyed the performance and had a good laugh!
